The story of St. Nicholas dates back 2,000 years. Two thousand years ago, Ingram Valley was in the Iron Age, and our farm, which sits among the Cheviot Hills, was an area steeped in history that stretches back to the Ice Age. Over the ages, the hillforts became essential sites for Iron Age settlers, serving as homes and strongholds for numerous farming families who lived and defended these lands across generations.
This festive period, we’re offering families the unique opportunity to travel back in time 2,000 years alongside St. Nick and learn what life was like in the valley in the Iron Age, right up to the modern day. You’ll also have a chance to help Santa feed the deer, and if you’re lucky, there may even be snow!
Your journey will end with a complimentary star-themed gift bag and warm drink at the gorgeous Ingram Café (which will be well-needed to warm up after being up in the hills!
Guests joining us for a Safari experience this Winter will get the chance to go on an exclusive 1-hour journey through time with Santa Claus (with a LANTRA award) in his Tinsel Tractor, helping him feed the deer in the hills and learn about the history of our farm. While you’re travelling through time you can explore the wonderous sites and landscapes of the Ingram Hill Fort, while looking out for the enchanting Stags in their natural habitats.
The journey will start in pre-historic times, with the birth of baby Jesus. You will learn how the people of the Iron Age lived and what the farm looked like in Roman Times. You’ll also hear about the new kingdoms that emerged after Northumbria was founded in the seventh century, and how Christianity was introduced to Ingram.

Our wonderful wildlife isn’t the only exciting feature of Winter on Ingram Farm. Greenery flourishes in the valley, with conifers, holly and ivy visible and beautiful pine trees catching snowflakes on their branches. Red squirrels love to make a home in the pines. We also have some mistletoe on the farm, a plant synonymous with Christmas and said to have been significantly important to the Iron Age settlers.
Christmas is also close to the mid-winter solstice, where some monuments on the farm are aligned on the mid-winter sunrise and sunset. You won’t want to miss out on this breathtaking phenomenon!
If you’re interested in joining us for this uniquely festive opportunity this Winter, don’t hesitate to book your place. We have limited availability for our St. Nicholas experience, but we would love to see as many people visit the farm as possible—as we’d love to share a bit of joy with you this Christmas.
